Design Studio (iii)

This course unit is meant to demystify the process of architectural design in order to enable students to develop their personal design methodologies and enrich their design vocabularies. The studio assignments are to emphasize the visual, structural and functional aspects through designing small architectural forms of plastic and constructive types taking into consideration socio-economic, environmental, and ergonomic factors both at the level of interior space and exteriors.

(The students are expected to partake in TWO simple projects in this semester, e.g. school building and club)

Construction (iii)

Nature of buildings & building; structural concepts: solid, skeletal and surface structures. Means of vertical circulations: staircases and ramps: in-situ cast, precast and pre-stressed concrete stairs, metal stairs, fire exits escape stairs, fixed ladders, lifts, escalators and passenger’s conveyors. Water-proofing in buildings. Basements, and basement tanking

History of Architecture (iii)

Study of the history and theories of art and architecture that dominated European practice during the renaissance era  (1400-1700) up to the French Revolution (1789). The Architectural movements of the first era included Romanticism and Classicism which had great effects on architectural features and characteristics. Study of the cultural and technological changes that shaped the Architecture of the 19th and early 20th Centuries in Imperial Europe which was able to spread the world over; avant-guard movements, modernism, post-modernism and the currently debatable deconstructionlism.

Structures (i)

Reaction ,stability ,equilibrium ,internal forces(normal shear and bending),analysis of beams (method of section and mathematical approach),determinate frames and arches ,analysis of trusses (joints and sections),structural properties ( centroid and inertia),and  introduction to intermediate structure

Environmental Controls (i)

Climatic (global and local) solar systems, analysis (sun path diagrammes), shading, human thermal comfort, principals of  psychorometry .Principals of solar controls  ,orientation,isolation,shading) Energy sources: renewable and non- renewable Interior Air Quality  (IAQ) Building Energy Management: sustainable designs,hi-tech and eco-tech and their applications in architectural design.

Planning (i)

Physical planning theories and their development through history. The city and its evolution as a functional, organic entity in response to social, political economical and demographic factors. Theoretical and applied studies of the built environment, infrastructure, and land use transportation and communication networks, urban indicators, means of estimating and accommodating future urban growth.

Compputer Application in Architecture (i)

Introduction to computer drafting programs and their applications; three-dimensional drawings. Developing abilities of the design process through mastering the basic concepts of rendering and advanced presentation techniques. Students at this stage must be able to present their projects in convincing soft –copy formats.

Design Studio (iv)

Assignments of this semester include design of specialized buildings other than domestic buildings; simple public spaces with complex functions, advanced technical and structural systems. Emphasis is on planning, plan-making, structural options, and building cost. Skills to develop are: programming, site analysis, advanced graphic and reprographic techniques. Individual students are to carry-out simple research on comparable buildings; local or foreign and discuss the results in studio seminars. (The students are expected to partake in TWO projects in this semester, e.g. shopping centre and cultural centre)

Construction (iv)

Super structure :skeleton buildings :functional requirements ,materials ; steel, concrete, aluminum and timber. Framed buildings in hot –rolled and cold- formed steel sections ,pre-engineered steel buildings (how to use manuals). R.C. framed buildings ,suspended floors ,for steel and precast concrete frames .Use and treatment of expansions and settlement joints.

History of Architecture (iv)

Study of the architecture of the Fareast countries: India, China and Japan. How Indian indigenous architectural heritage survived and prospered despite Persian, Greco-Roman and Muslim invasions, and how that heritage still persists in religious and public edifices through the imperial and post-imperial era of modern times. Traditional Chinese Architecture, the influence of tapestries, painting and myths on architectural practice in history till the present. Japanese Indigenous Architecture, relationship with Chinese Architecture. How structure is employed to regulate space; principles of Japanese contemporary practice in Architecture.

Structures (ii)

Concept of elasticity, stress-strain relation, applications, Poisson’s ratio (lateral deformation, area/volume), and thermal deformation, internal stresses (normal ,shear and bending),Mohr’s circle and stress resultants, elastic deflections, intermediate structures, three moments and moment distribution, energy method and elastic analysis.

Environmental Controls (ii)

Water supply to buildings. Cold and hot water distribution (up feed and down feed systems) .plumbing fixtures. Fire suppression systems. Sanitary and surface water drainage systems. Sewage disposal, on-site sewage treatment. Refuse disposal. Piped gas systems in buildings.

Planning (ii)

Urban Design: history and theories of urban design; concepts of architectural space, methods of visual analysis, identity of the urban space, social and economical influences on the methodology of tackling the problems of the morphology and typology of the city; concepts of urban evolution regeneration and urban infill; urban open spaces their enclosures, landscaping and controls.

Computer Application in Architecture (ii)

Introduction to computer productivity tools; blocks, slide facilities, script files, and attributes .understanding concepts of V. port object linking and editing. 3D drafting and modeling techniques, construction planes, 3D surfaces, elevations; use of dynamic projections Solid modeling with driving primitive command and Boolean operation .Use of region modeling solid modifiers .Rendering, scene settings, animation and image filing.
